It is perfectly correct to view time management as a list of rules that involves scheduling of appointments, goal settings, thorough planning, creating “to do” lists and prioritising.

These of course are the core basics of time management that should be understood to develop an efficient personal time management skill. However, these basic skills can be fine tuned further to include the finer points of each skill that can give you that extra reserve to make the results you desire.

But there are more skills involved in time management than the core basics. Skills such as decision making, inherent abilities such as emotional intelligence and critical thinking are also essential to your personal growth. Hi Nahid,

Excellent point. There are many elements that are involved in effective time management, some of which you mention. As you point out, utilizing external methods of structuring our time is a good place to begin, but there are internal factors as well.

This article is the just the first in a series of articles planned on this subject that will address both external and internal approaches to learning how to manage our time. This was an introduction (hence ‘basics’), and there will be more coming. I invite your insights on those as well.
